When clients come to us asking about audio, the first question we ask is: what do you want to feel? That question usually leads to a conversation about two distinct categories — home theater and distributed audio. They are related, but they solve very different problems.
Home Theater: The Immersive Experience
A home theater is a dedicated room (or purpose-built space) designed to deliver a cinematic experience. Think 4K laser projection, a 120-inch or larger screen, and a full Dolby Atmos speaker array — ceiling speakers included. Every element of the room, from the acoustics to the seating to the lighting, is calibrated for the single purpose of putting you inside the content.
Distributed Audio: Music Everywhere
Distributed audio (also called multi-room audio or whole-home audio) is about ambient sound throughout your home. Invisible in-ceiling or in-wall speakers in the kitchen, primary suite, patio, and pool area. Each zone plays independently — different sources, different volumes — or they can all sync to the same music for a party. The goal is effortless sound that follows your life.
Do You Have to Choose?
Absolutely not — and most of our clients do both. A dedicated theater for films and sports, and distributed MartinLogan or Harman Kardon speakers throughout the rest of the home, all controlled from a single Savant interface. The systems can even share sources, so your theater room can feed music to the rest of the house during a party.
